San Gimignano Toscana

5 Unmissable Treasures of San Gimignano in Tuscany

Everyone loves the evocative atmosphere of the village of San Gimignano in Tuscany. The tower houses that make its profile unmistakable, the typical flavors of the local restaurants, the beauty of the Cathedral and the surrounding countryside, have made it the well-known art treasure we know, today declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

During a holiday in this region, it is certainly worth making a stop in San Gimignano in Tuscany, where there are at least 5 things not to be missed:

  • Itinerary of the Towers: the characteristic towers of San Gimignano in Tuscany have earned the city the funny name of "Manhattan of the Middle Ages". Dating back to the municipal era, the towers were originally about 72 and were built by the major families of the city to demonstrate their power over the others. Today only 16 remain: the oldest is the “Torre Rognosa” (51 m), while the highest is the “Torre Grossa” (54 m).
  • The Duomo: considered one of the finest examples of Romanesque in the region, the cathedral of San Gimignano, Tuscany, was finished in 1148 and still contains works by the great masters Benozzo Gozzoli and Ghirlandaio.
  • Torture Museum: this very particular museum is dedicated to the countless and most terrible tortures in vogue in the Middle Ages and in San Gimignano, Tuscany, documented in books and parchments of the time or by real original pieces, such as the famous virgin of Nuremberg, a species of a sarcophagus whose internal parts were covered with iron spines. A curious and gruesome museum, recommended only for those with a strong stomach
  • Spezieria di Santa Fina: if you want to know what an old pharmacy was like, visit Santa Fina. The beautiful painted ceramic and glass jars, medicaments and potions will catapult you back into the fabulous world of suggestive medieval medicine.
  • Vernaccia and Zafferano: these are the two most characteristic specialties of San Gimignano in Tuscany. The spice of saffron has played an important role in the development of the town's economy, while Vernaccia di San Gimignano is still one of the best white wines of San Gimignano, Tuscany today.

To learn about and try the saffron-based recipes and taste the famous Vernaccia di San Gimignano, you can book at the Restaurant of the Hotel Casolare Terre Rosse, one of the best restaurants in San Gimignano, a rustic and elegant setting where typical local dishes are served based on meat, truffles and vegetables.
