The path of Sigerico: The Francigena Way

Historically, Francigena way meant the roads that connected the territories dominated by the Franks to Rome in medieval times. The Middle Ages was the time when pilgrimages were an integral part of the daily life of most people.Pilgrims crossed unknown territories leading to holy places. Today we talk about the Francigena way also to indicate those cultural itineraries to Rome, intended for modern pilgrimage and sustainable tourism.

The Francigena Way has been recognized by the Council of Europe as a cultural itinerary in 1994 and corresponds to the 80 places crossed by archbishop Sigeric travelling back from Rome, where he received the Pallium from the Pope in 990.

The most famous cities of the Via Francigena are:

England: Canterbury, Dover

France: Calais, Bruay-La-Bruissiere, Arras, Laon, Reims, Chalon-en-Champagne, Langres, Besançon, Pontarlier

Switzerland: Orbe, Lausanne, Montreux, Aigle, Saint Maurice, Martigny

Italy: Gran San Bernardo Pass, Aosta, Ivrea, Vercelli, Pavia, Piacenza, Fidenza, Cisa Pass, Sarzana, Massa, Lucca, San Gimignano, Siena, San Quirico d 'Orcia, Bolsena, Viterbo, Rome, Vatican City .

The entire pedestrian path is around 2200 kilometers. The Italian section measures approximately 1020 km

Along the way, two-way red-white paint or adhesive material signs were installed, often with a small black pilgrim in the center or the inscription VF or Via Francigena.

San Gimignano is crossed along the Gambassi Terme-San Gimignano and San Gimignano-Monteriggioni legs and has been defined as one of the most beautiful stages of the Francigena Way, a route in the heart of the city and in the middle of fields of olive groves and vineyards. A unique and extraordinary scenary.
