Dante in the streets of Florence

This year’s Lonely Planet Best in Travel 2021 has been dedicated to sustainability, community and diversity.

This list includes the Dante's ways to support a slow tourism that enhances “the time of slowness, time of waiting, of dilated hours, of small things. It’s the time of respect for others, for nature, for our planet. " Cit. Stefano Accorsi.

Dante Alighieri's life is closely linked to Florence where he was born and lived until his exile. The city has undergone profound transformations from the "Fiorenza" cited from Dante. There were no Giotto's bell tower, Brunelleschi's dome and even Palazzo Vecchio, whose construction began in 1299. The city was a network of narrow streets and stone and wooden houses, interspersed with towers, small churches, shops. Nevertheless, still today we can find a myriad of places related to the great poet.

The Baptistery of San Giovanni, "My beautiful San Giovanni", so called by Dante in the canticle of Hell, was the place where the poet was baptized and which he thinks about imagining his return from the afterlife

The Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, here the poet attended the famous Studium, one of the most important centers in Europe for the teaching of philosophy and theology.

The Church of Santa Margherita dei Cerchi, the church where Dante often met her muse, Beatrice Portinari, always accompanied by her mother and nurse. Curiously, the tradition of leaving love notes in a basket left on purpose was born.

The Dante district where the Dante's house is located, a nineteenth-century replica of a tower house, in which an educational museum on Dante, his biography and his works has been created.

Walking through the neighborhood we can admire the 33 "Dante tombstones", posted at the beginning of the twentieth century to keep alive the Poet's bond with the places and characters of his work.
