Discovering the Charms of Chianti Senese: A Perfect Day Trip from San Gimignano

The Chianti Senese, the area surrounding Siena, offers a quintessential Tuscan experience with its rolling hills, vineyards, and medieval villages.

Our country hotel, Casolare Le Terre Rosse, is nestled in the picturesque Parco di Castelvecchio, just outside the historic town of San Gimignano. It's the perfect base for exploring the wonders of Tuscany. As a guest, you're perfectly positioned for memorable day trips through the enchanting Chianti Senese region.

Castellina in Chianti

About a 30-minute drive from San Gimignano, Castellina in Chianti is a charming hilltop town that serves as an excellent introduction to the Chianti Senese area. You can walk through the Via delle Volte, a covered medieval street with shops and cafes. Don't miss the artisanal gelato at Gelateria Castellina.

Make sure to visit the Rocca (fortress) for panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, and explore the Archaeological Museum of Chianti Senese to learn about Etruscan history. Finally, complete the experience with a wine tasting at one of the area's famous wineries.

Radda in Chianti

A short drive from Castellina takes you to Radda. Here, you can expect picturesque views of vineyards and olive groves, creating an authentic Tuscan landscape that you've seen in movies and can now experience in person.

Take a leisurely stroll along the ancient walls and enjoy the view. Don't miss visiting the Church of San Niccolò and the Palazzo del Podestà. A must-see is the Castello d'Albola, where you can taste fine wines or explore Casa Chianti Classico, an interactive museum dedicated to the region's famous wine.

Stop at Bar Dante in the town center for a gourmet break and savor typical Tuscan dishes paired with a glass of Chianti Classico wine.

Gaiole in Chianti

15 minutes east of Radda is Gaiole in Chianti, known for its castles and wine estates. Explore Castello di Brolio, home to the Ricasoli family, and don't miss their wine tasting.

Take a leisurely walk through the town center and soak in the peaceful atmosphere and charming narrow streets. If you happen to be there on a Friday morning, be sure to visit the bustling weekly market, which offers a great chance to experience authentic village life.

For wine enthusiasts, Gaiole is home to numerous local wineries where you can sample prestigious Chianti Classico labels and join guided tours of vineyards and cellars. Additionally, the area is dotted with lovely little churches boasting centuries-old frescoes and valuable works of art.

Castelnuovo Berardenga

Head south for about 30 minutes to reach Castelnuovo Berardenga, marking the southern edge of the Chianti Senese region. Visit the Villa Chigi Saracini and its beautiful English-style gardens. Explore the unique Landscape Museum to understand the area's geological and cultural history. The museum offers interactive exhibits about the Chianti territory.

Also worth a visit is the Church of San Giovanni Battista, which houses splendid 15th-century frescoes, a testament to Tuscan sacred art.

Finally, treat yourself to a moment of pure relaxation at the Terme di San Giovanni, famous for their beneficial thermal waters. A rejuvenating experience, perfect to end your day of exploration in complete well-being.

Monteriggioni

Conclude your day trip in the Chianti Senese with a visit to Monteriggioni, about 40 minutes west of Castelnuovo Berardenga, and on the way back to San Gimignano. Walk on the circular walls for great views and visit the Monteriggioni in Arme Museum to see medieval armor. Explore the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the Monteriggioni 1213 museum.

If you visit Monteriggioni in July, don't miss the evocative Medieval Festival, an event that will revive the atmosphere of the past.

To make your trip even more special, choose to stay at Hotel Casolare Le Terre Rosse, an ideal retreat where you can relax after a day of discovery. Remember to book in advance, especially during peak season, to guarantee your place in this beautiful Tuscan oasis. Get ready for an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Chianti Senese. Enjoy your trip!
