The stunning running race between Volterra and San Gimignano

Nestled in the heart of the Chianti Senese, Hotel Casolare Le Terre Rosse is the perfect choice if you dream of a holiday surrounded by nature without giving up the comfort and services of a 3-star Superior hotel. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery, our hotel is just 5 km from San Gimignano, the city of a hundred towers, and a 20-minute drive from Volterra, the ancient Etruscan city. These two Tuscan gems deserve to be explored at a slow pace, with your eyes wide open to their beauty.

Moreover, if you stay with us in October, you’ll have the unique opportunity to participate in the evocative running race that connects Volterra and San Gimignano – a wonderful way to fully immerse yourself in our region.

An itinerary of history and nature

On 27th October, one of the most fascinating races in the region will take place, an event that combines a love of running with the beauty of Tuscany. This is the Volterra - San Gimignano race. The route stretches for 29.5 km, with almost 20 km on white gravel roads, connecting Volterra and San Gimignano in an unparalleled sporting and scenic experience. The race begins in Volterra, 534 metres above sea level, in the historic Piazza dei Priori, dominated by the Palazzo dei Priori, the oldest town hall in Tuscany. After a brief descent to the route's lowest point, 150 metres above sea level along the Era River, runners climb towards Ulignano, a small rural village known for the Villa of Ulignano. From here, the ascent continues towards Sensano and then to Cornocchio, the highest point of the race – 596 metres above sea level – where participants can enjoy spectacular views of the Tuscan countryside.

The following descent brings runners along the edge of the Castelvecchio Nature Reserve, an area of extraordinary beauty surrounding the Hotel Casolare Le Terre Rosse park. After passing through woods and fields, the race continues towards the Vagli farm, before reaching the historic centre of San Gimignano through Porta San Matteo. The final kilometres are run on asphalt, with the unmistakable silhouette of San Gimignano’s towers providing a sublime backdrop. The finish line in Piazza del Duomo, in front of the majestic Romanesque façade, marks the end of a route that beautifully combines sport and stunning landscapes.

After the race, relax at the Casolare

Taking part in the race between Volterra and San Gimignano offers a unique opportunity to experience Tuscany authentically, immersing yourself in its landscapes and history. After exploring the area on foot, however, there’s nothing better than returning to Hotel Casolare Le Terre Rosse and enjoying an evening of pure comfort. The well-equipped, cosy rooms provide the perfect refuge for relaxation, while the hotel’s park, with its vast green spaces, invites peaceful strolls.

We invite you to savour a typical Tuscan dinner at Hostaria Terre Rosse, the hotel’s restaurant to recharge after your efforts. Here, the freshest ingredients and expert cooking methods bring out the genuine flavours of our Tuscany in dishes that are irresistible from the first scent.

A stay at Casolare Le Terre Rosse is a wonderful opportunity to discover the Chianti Senese in all its nuances: book on our website and prepare for a truly unique experience.
