A trip to Siena

Just 35 km from the Hotel Casolare le Terre Rosse is Siena, a city rich in art, history and flavors.
Piazza del Campo is one of the most beautiful squares in Italy and represents the soul of the city. In the Middle Ages it was used as a market and a place to celebrate parties, anniversaries, games and events. Today, every 2nd July and 16th August, Piazza del Campo hosts the Palio, the famous equestrian competition between the districts of Siena.
The square has a circumference of 333 meters, and is paved with a fishtail red brick design that gives it the shape of a shell. Here thaere are the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia, from where you can admire the view over the city.
The Palazzo Pubblico, built at the beginning of the 14th century, today houses the Civic Museum as well as the municipal offices, where unique works of art in the world are preserved, such as the Majesty by Simone Martini, the frescoes by Spinello Aretino and the Good and Bad Government of Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
Located near Piazza del Campo, in the highest part of the city of Siena, stands the Opera del Duomo complex, one of the major architectural and cultural attractions of Tuscany.
The whole Cathedral is dominated by two-tone black and white, a reference to the colors of the Siena coat of arms.
Built with a Latin cross and three naves, it was covered with black and white bands of marble in reference to the balzana: the heraldic coat of arms of Siena.
The Duomo Complex includes the Floor, the Piccolomi Library and the 'Gate to Heaven', the Opera Museum, the Crypt and the Baptistery.
It contains work by some of the most important masters in the history of European art, such as the splendid Baptistery built by Donatello to the right of the Piccolomini Library, the Rose window by Duccio Buoninsegna, the marble pulpit by Nicola Pisano and the famous Majesty of Duccio di Buoninsegna.
An absolute masterpiece remains the floor of the Cathedral with marble commissary, its construction lasted five centuries and great artists worked there such as Sassetta, Domenico di Bartolo, Matteo di Giovanni, Domenico Beccafumi, and Pinturicchio.
Finally we would like to mention the Basilica of San Domenico. The Basilica is linked to the figure of Saint Catherine of Siena Its severe, smooth, unadorned appearance contains works of art such as the Majesty by Guido da Siena, the fresco by Andrea Vanni which depicts Saint Catherine, the only true portrait of her in life, the Chapel of Saint Catherine which contains the reliquary with the head of the Saint, and the Adoration of the Shepherds by Francesco di Giorgio Martini.
