Trekking, Passeggiate and Jogging in San Gimignano

Are you a fan of Jogging, Trekking or Walking immersed in the heart of nature? Then a holiday in San Gimignano is just what can do for you.

In fact, the Hotel Casolare Le Terre Rosse offers various possibilities from this point of view. Since it is completely surrounded by greenery, it is not difficult to try or discover the itineraries for those with the passions mentioned above.

Undoubtedly one of the things to try is to walk the famous Via Francigena, a historic road that dates back to the Middle Ages and which had the purpose of joining Canterbury to the city of Rome but also to the ports of Puglia. Subsequently, however, this way, in modern times, has been rediscovered by the passionate travelers who with love but also willpower, set out along this wonderful and surprising path.

The value and importance of this ancient street is testified by the fact that since 2001 the European Association of the Vie Francigene has decided to coordinate the growth and enhancement of a path that, passing through Italy and Europe, retraces the entire history of our continent.

But how many km are we talking about?
There are 1000 kilometers of the Via Francigena in Italy starting from the Gran San Bernardo Pass in Rome (see photo). During the itinerary, you will come across scenarios of various kinds: mountain paths, open countryside, roads surrounded by cypress or pine trees, stone mule tracks and much more. And in all this there is no risk of getting lost, in fact the trail signs guide travelers through the landscapes and… all roads lead to Rome (just like the famous saying). What makes the route comforting is the fact that the route was built in such a way that everyone can get close to it: from trekking professionals to those who are just occasional travelers. The Via Francigena is in fact devoid of technical difficulties, but is instead safe and easy to travel for all ages.

Which route from San Gimignano?
Since our hotel is located just a few minutes away from San Gimignano, we want to suggest an interesting itinerary for trekking lovers. After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, you might think about tackling the San Gimignano - Monteriggioni stage for a total of 30.9 km.

The departure is from Piazza della Cisterna in San Gimignano. It is classified as one of the most beautiful stages of the Via Francigena. Once you leave San Gimignano, you immediately come across a stretch of uphill and downhill stretches until you reach the Sigerico stage, still not precisely located today: Molino d'Aiano. At this point, continue towards Badia a Coneo, then Gracciano and again to Strove, where you can be enchanted by the magnificent Romanesque church (see photo). When you are ready to leave, you pass through the splendid complex of Abbadia a Isola before reaching Monteriggioni: you cannot go wrong, you will notice the city thanks to its recognizable towers.

Download the map
We know that when you venture on unknown roads, no matter how there may be indications, you always run the risk of getting lost, especially for beginners. So to avoid hitches, we decided to share a map of the itinerary that you can download by clicking here. Please, remember to save it on your smartphone or make a print before you set off.

Other itineraries?
There are many others and if you stay at our hotel, we will be happy to suggest the best trekking routes and we will be able to give you advice on what to stop and see, where to eat and where to rest.

We wish you a peaceful journey and a nice holiday in San Gimignano. Here are some shots taken from the route of the Via Francigena.
